‘Why was Assembly not informed?’: Omar flags lapse over former legislator’s death, pays tribute to departed leaders

Srinagar: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday flagged an administrative lapse after the Assembly Secretariat was not informed about the death of former legislator Mohammad Sultan Pandithpori, during obituary references on the opening day of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly’s Autumn Session.

Omar questioned why the concerned district administration had failed to communicate the former legislator’s death to the Assembly Secretariat, saying the lapse had already been taken note of and an explanation should be sought from the officials concerned.

The Chief Minister also said he expected the Chief Secretary to have taken action in the matter.

During the obituary references, Omar paid tribute to former Governor Satya Pal Malik, former legislator and minister G M Shaheen and other public figures who had passed away.

Referring to the conduct of obituary references in the House, Omar suggested that the Assembly consider adopting a shorter format similar to the practice followed in Parliament.

He said lengthy speeches during obituary references could at times become political and that the occasion should primarily remain focused on paying respects to the departed.

Paying tribute to Malik, Omar recalled his long public career, noting that he had served as an MLA, minister and Governor in different states.

Omar also remembered G M Shaheen, describing him as a courageous leader who continued his public service after surviving a major landmine blast.

The Chief Minister said the departed leaders had contributed to public welfare in their respective capacities and urged legislators to reflect on their public service.

The obituary references were held as the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly began its Autumn Session in Srinagar on Monday.
