Explosions Reported Near Hormuz as Trump Says US Had ‘Very Good’ Iran Talks
US President Donald Trump said American officials have held “very good” talks with an Iranian delegation at the United Nations, as an explosion was reported near Iran’s Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday.
According to Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported that the sound of an explosion was heard near Qeshm Island, but the cause and any damage or casualties were not immediately known.
The reports came hours after Trump said US envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner met Iranian officials for about three hours on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
“They had a very good meeting, a very productive meeting,” Mr Trump said, noting that another meeting was scheduled “in the very near future.”
Iranian state television said Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was among the Iranian delegation. The talks were held through mediators and Witkoff said he hoped they’d be “constructive and promising.”
The talks took place amid tensions over the Strait of Hormuz and the wider US-Iran conflict.
