Macron condemns Gaza inaction as Canada, UK push Palestinian statehood at UN

French President Emmanuel Macron criticised the international community for the Gaza crisis as Canada and the United Kingdom reaffirmed their support for Palestinian statehood at the United Nations General Assembly.

Macron said that the suffering in Gaza should “shame all of us” and questioned the credibility of countries that are remaining passive as the humanitarian crisis continues. “What credibility do we have if we continue to remain inactive in the face of Gaza?” he asked, Al Jazeera reported.

The French president also condemned restrictions on humanitarian access and Israeli measures in the occupied West Bank, while warning that ongoing settlement expansion jeopardizes the prospects of a two-state solution.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham told the gathering his government would not “stand by” as the suffering in Gaza continues, saying failure to deliver a two-state solution would “corrode trust” in politicians who have repeatedly supported the idea.

As the three nations worked together to press for more international action on Palestinian statehood, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney pledged $ 71 million to efforts in support of a two-state solution.
