Trump backs IMEC, calls for shift in Middle East energy routes away from Iran

President Donald Trump on Tuesday backed the India – Middle East – Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), saying the project could help shift regional energy infrastructure away from routes susceptible to disruption involving Iran.

Speaking at a meeting with Gulf Cooperation Council and Arab leaders on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, Trump emphasised the need for alternative energy routes.

“Iran’s terrorist attacks on commercial shipping in neighbouring countries have shown the need to shift Middle East energy infrastructure away from the Iranian checkpoints,” Trump said, according to ANI. “That’s why my administration strongly supports the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor and other places in the form of getting oil out, whether it’s pipelines or anything else.”

Trump also said the region was “on the verge of overcoming challenges that have plagued this region for decades” and described the leaders at the meeting as close US allies and partners.

Unveiled in 2023, IMEC is a network of rail, maritime and road links connecting India with the Gulf and Europe. The proposed corridor aims to enhance trade and connectivity among the three regions.
