Trump hails ‘very good’ US-Iran meeting

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that US and Iranian officials had a three-hour meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly which he described as “very good” and “very productive.”

“It was a very good meeting,” Trump told reporters in New York, offering few details on the substance of the discussions. He said another meeting was planned “in the very near future.”

Trump said the US delegation included US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Later, Witkoff said the talks were constructive and promising and that the sides had been talking through mediators all day.

The talks took place hours after Trump used his address to the General Assembly to warn Iran of serious consequences if it does not reach a deal with Washington. Iran had a choice between a deal that could let it rebuild and what Trump called “obliteration.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also met with Witkoff in New York, Iranian state media reported, and Tehran laid out conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, including an end to a naval blockade and the unfreezing of Iranian assets. Washington has not verified these conditions.
