Ladakh’s pashmina, traditional handicrafts on display at Lakmé Fashion Week in New Delhi
New Delhi: Ladakh’s renowned Pashmina, traditional shawls, handwoven textiles, embroidery and indigenous handicrafts are being showcased at Lakmé Fashion Week, scheduled from October 13 to 18 at The Taj in New Delhi.
A dedicated stall at the event highlights the region’s rich cultural heritage and the craftsmanship of its artisans, weavers, spinners and women entrepreneurs, providing them with an opportunity to present their products on a prominent national platform.
At the centre of Ladakh’s Pashmina tradition is the Changthang community, whose pastoral way of life is closely associated with Changra goats, known for producing exceptionally fine fibre. Despite the harsh weather and challenging conditions of the high-altitude plateau, local herders have preserved this distinctive tradition over generations.
The showcase highlights the journey of Pashmina from the high-altitude pastures of Changthang to finely crafted shawls and textiles, bringing together traditional techniques and contemporary design.
One of the key attractions will be a runway presentation scheduled for Sunday, October 18, featuring collections by designers from Ladakh. The showcase will include Pashmina creations, traditional embroidery and modern interpretations of the region’s indigenous textiles.
Ladakh’s participation aims to promote its cultural identity, create wider market opportunities for local artisans and strengthen sustainable livelihoods. It also highlights the role of women-led Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and local enterprises in preserving traditional skills and craftsmanship.
