Vishvajit Ramchandra More of India achieved a historic victory by securing a silver medal in the men’s 55kg Greco-Roman event at the Under-23 World Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas, becoming the first Indian wrestler to reach the final in that discipline.

According to a report by News On AIR, the 22-year-old from Kolhapur, Maharashtra, was nearly successful in winning the gold medal but was defeated by Koba Karumidze from Georgia with a score of 13-12 in the final on Thursday.

He reached the final by producing a series of good performances, beginning with a close 10-8 victory against Mexico’s Isaac Marin Mata and then winning 8-1 against Iran’s reigning Under-20 world champion, Armin Shamsipour, in the quarter-finals.

He then won against Russia’s Malik Gigiev in the semi-finals and thus secured his spot in the gold-medal match.

The silver medal brings the total number of medals that More has won at the previous editions of the Under-23 World Championships to two. According to the Indian Express, he is the first Indian Greco-Roman wrestler to have won medals at the event in three consecutive editions.

His performance represents a breakthrough for Indian wrestling, since More won the country’s first silver medal in the Greco-Roman style at the Under-23 World Championships.
