Iran claims it is in touch with intermediaries regarding Strait of Hormuz re-opening scheme

Iran remains in discussions with the mediators over suggestions to carry out a seven-day plan to restore the shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said, indicating the continuing diplomatic efforts to ease tension in the region, Al Jazeera reported.

“We are in continuous and close contact with the mediators to exchange views on how to implement the plan,” Araghchi told reporters. He said the plan was designed to restore navigation through the strategic waterway, a crucial route for oil and gas exports from the region.

The Strait of Hormuz, which links the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, has been the focus of the conflict. Any attack on shipping passing through the strategic narrow waterway, which is a vital artery for oil supplies, has sent prices soaring.

The diplomacy comes as US president Donald Trump has authorised Vice-president JD Vance to reach out to Iran over their request for medical supplies, which is another indication of openness to engagement.

At least some of these contacts, however, will lead to an overall agreement on how to resolve this eight month war. Washington and Tehran are still at loggerheads on sanctions, security arrangements and Iran’s nuclear programme.

A decision to reopen the strait would be a positive move to restart shipping and relieve pressures on energy markets, even if the details and timing of the plan cannot be verified independently.
