Poland looks to India as concerns over China ties deepen
Poland is keen to expand economic and strategic relations with India as it tries to expand international relations following fears about its relationship with China.
This follows developments when India and Poland upgraded their relationship to a strategic partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Warsaw in August 2024. Since then, the two nations have been trying to broaden trade and cooperation in strategic sectors.
In the joint statement after a visit by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk to India from Oct 21-23, the two countries agreed to increase their bilateral trade twofold by 2030. Bilateral trade was worth €6.3 billion in 2025.
India is seen as a potential partner for breaking out of over-reliance on China by diversifying exports and supply chains, according to an analysis published by the Polish Institute of International Affairs on Oct. 27.
Among their issues with China is an unbalanced trade relationship, with China continuing to show support for Russia despite the war in Ukraine.
Cooperation on defence, critical minerals, technology, infrastructure and investment, among other areas, was also discussed during the recent talks.
The restart of the engagement comes as Poland seeks to diversify its economic relations, while India intends to deepen its relations with the European countries and grow its role in global supply chains.
