Trump says he may become ‘Mr Veto’ if Democrats win US midterms
US President Donald Trump warned the opposition Democrats that he could be “Mr Veto” if they take control of Congress in Tuesday’s midterm elections, threatening to veto their legislation before later striking compromises.
“I suppose I’ll become Mr Veto. I just think they’ll blow it,” Trump told New York Post columnist Miranda Devine in an interview excerpt aired on Fox News on Sunday.
“They’ll be sending stuff up, you veto it,” he said, explaining that after “a month or two” of bills he has vetoed, Democrats would come to him for a compromise.
The comments came amid the prospect that Republicans could lose their slim majorities in Congress. Opinion polls indicate that Democrats are favoured to take control of the House of Representatives while the Senate race is tight, Bloomberg reports.
President Trump is now barnstorming across the country to rally support for Republican races, including in states where the party has been the standard-bearer.
Democratic control of Congress may stand in the way of the president’s legislative agenda and could lead to more oversight of his administration via congressional investigations.
