New Zealand opener Devon Conway has been sidelined for Wednesday’s first one-day international against India after colliding with team-mate Matt Henry in practice, Cricbuzz reported.

The two collided when trying to take a catch in a fielding drill at Eden Park in Auckland the day before the first of the three-match series. They were both given on-field treatment and conducted head injury assessments.

Conway was brought to hospital for further assessment, which revealed he has suffered a concussion, and he has been ruled out of the game, the governing body said. Henry will continue to be assessed but is still available for selection.

Santner said after his meeting, Henry seemed to be in good condition, but the situation was worse for Conway.

“Dev’s been raced off premises. So, yeah, actually, that didn’t look too good, that collision,” Santner told reporters.

The setback is another headache for New Zealand heading into the five-game ODI series, with Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra already sidelined through injury.

Conway’s replacement for the first game is likely to be wicket-keeper-batsman Tim Seifert.

India defeated New Zealand 3-2 in the last five-match T20 international series after the visitors won the last two games.
