US midterm election results 2026: Democrats take Senate, move towards House control in major setback for Trump
Democrats have made major gains in the 2026 US midterm elections, securing control of the Senate and moving closer to taking over the House of Representatives in a major setback for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
According to the Associated Press (AP), Democrats have gained control of both chambers of Congress, giving them a stronger position to influence legislation and oversee the administration during the remainder of Trump’s presidential term.
In the Senate, Democrats overturned the Republican majority by winning several previously Republican-held seats, including contests in Texas, South Carolina, Iowa, Ohio and Kansas. The party has reached 53 seats, crossing the threshold required to control the chamber.
Several Senate races, however, were still being counted, including contests in Alaska, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana and Nebraska.
The Democratic gains have also put the party in a strong position in the House of Representatives, with several media outlets projecting a Democratic victory. Vote counting in a number of constituencies was continuing.
The election outcome represents a major political setback for Trump, whose Republicans had controlled both chambers of Congress.
Reacting to the results, Trump said he would accept the voters’ decision and indicated that he was willing to work with Democrats.
The midterm elections are widely seen as an important test of public sentiment towards the sitting president and his administration. The Democratic gains could reshape the political balance in Washington for the remaining years of Trump’s term.
