Trump says US may need to destroy what remains of Iran

US President Donald Trump warns more military strikes could be launched against Iran. “I’ll do what I have to do but I don’t want to do it to them any more than I have to,” he says. “I would prefer to do less but I think I may have to do more.”

“We’ll be making a decision in the very near future whether or not we go for the ultimate,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday.

“And I didn’t want to take down the country for good, I really didn’t, but I suppose I will,” he said. “And you will find out soon enough.”

Trump calculated that Iran would take 25 years to recover from the US-Israeli conflict that erupted in February.

When asked about reports that Tehran had forwarded a proposal on its nuclear programme to Washington via intermediaries, Trump said: “They’re not doing anything without our approval.”

His comments followed the US Republican loss in the midterm elections, which further fuelled debates over the US side’s management of the eight-month conflict.

Trump did not say what his options for further military action would be or when he might decide.
