Cease fire in Gaza still possible, says Joe Biden

US President Joe Biden stated on Sunday that he still believes a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip is “possible.” He assured reporters that negotiations are ongoing and emphasised that the possibility of a cease-fire remains, Anadolu reported.

On the same day, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Israel to advocate for a cease-fire and the release of hostages in Gaza.

The ongoing genocide in Gaza has led to over 40,000 Palestinian deaths and devastated much of the Gaza Strip, leaving most of its 2.3 million residents homeless and facing severe food shortages.

Hamas and other Palestinian groups are urging Israel to adhere to previously agreed-upon terms and implement mechanisms for their enforcement, rather than continuing negotiations amid ongoing attacks.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu referenced the May 27 principles, which proposed that Israel maintain control over the Philadelphi Corridor and the Rafah crossing on the Gaza-Egypt border.

In May, Biden indicated that Israel had proposed a three-phase plan to end hostilities, facilitate a hostage exchange, and rebuild Gaza.

Despite months of mediation efforts, recent talks in Doha concluded without a breakthrough. However, the US has introduced a new proposal aimed at addressing remaining issues and enabling swift implementation of the deal.
