Maharashtra: Tension gripped Dharavi on Saturday after hundreds of residents gathered on the streets to protest against the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) plan to demolish an allegedly illegal portion of a mosque.
In response, a large police force was deployed to maintain order and prevent any incidents, PTI reported quoting an official.
“A team from BMC’s G-North ward arrived at 90 Feet Road in Dharavi around 9 am to demolish the purportedly illegal section of the Mehboob-E-Subhani mosque. However, local residents quickly assembled and blocked the officials from accessing the lane where the mosque is situated,” the police official explained.
Additionally, hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Dharavi police station and staged a sit-in, opposing the civic body’s action. The situation is under control, the official noted.
Talks are underway between representatives from the mosque, BMC officials, and the Dharavi police in an effort to resolve the dispute, he added.
Dharavi, known for being Asia’s largest slum, is a densely populated area.
