New Delhi: A Delhi court convicted former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar on Wednesday in connection with the murders of two persons during the anti-Sikh riots in Saraswati Vihar. Special judge Kaveri Baweja issued the conviction and scheduled sentencing arguments for February 18. Kumar was brought to court from Tihar Jail for the ruling.
The case involves the killings of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh on November 1, 1984. Initially investigated by the Punjabi Bagh police, a special investigation team later took over the case. On December 16, 2021, the court framed charges against Kumar, citing a “prima facie” case.
The prosecution claimed a large mob, armed with weapons, engaged in widespread looting, arson, and destruction of Sikh properties to avenge the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The mob attacked the complainant’s house, killing Jaswant and his son, looting belongings, and setting the house on fire.
The court found sufficient evidence to form a “prima facie” opinion that Kumar was not only part of the mob but had led it.
