Mumbai attack accused Tahawwur Rana to reach India today; likely to be lodged in Tihar’s high-security ward

2008 Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana has been extradited to India.

New Delhi: Tahawwur Hussain Rana, an accused in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks and currently being extradited from the United States, is expected to be held in a high-security ward at Delhi’s Tihar Jail upon arrival, according to prison officials.

Sources told news agent IANS that all necessary arrangements have been completed to ensure secure detention.

Rana, 64, a Pakistan-born Canadian national, is known to be a close associate of David Coleman Headley (also known as Daood Gilani), a key conspirator in the Mumbai attacks and a US citizen.

His extradition to India follows the US Supreme Court’s dismissal of his final legal appeal against the move. A multi-agency Indian team was dispatched to the US to facilitate his transfer, officials said.

The 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, carried out by ten Pakistani terrorists who infiltrated the city via the Arabian Sea, targeted major landmarks including a railway station, two luxury hotels, and a Jewish center. The nearly 60-hour siege claimed 166 lives and pushed India and Pakistan to the edge of conflict.
