Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday condemned the restrictions imposed on JK Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who visited the Martyrs’ Graveyard in Srinagar amid tight curbs and was allegedly stopped and physically confronted by armed forces personnel.

“What is wrong in visiting the graveyard of martyrs? This is not only unfortunate, it also snatches the democratic right of a citizen. What happened this morning to an elected Chief Minister @OmarAbdullah is unacceptable. Shocking. Shameful,” Banerjee posted on X.

Her remarks came hours after Omar Abdullah posted that he had to scale a wall and walk from Nowhatta Chowk to reach the Martyrs’ Graveyard, as armed forces personnel had blocked the route and even tried to stop him physically.

The graveyard at Naqshband Sahib is where the martyrs of July 13, 1931, are buried — people who died protesting against autocratic rule. July 13 is observed as Martyrs’ Day in Jammu and Kashmir.
