New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day amid loud protests from Opposition members and will reconvene at 11 am on Tuesday for a scheduled discussion on Operation Sindoor.
The Upper House had resumed at 2 pm after two earlier adjournments but was once again disrupted by sloganeering, particularly over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in election-bound Bihar.
As the Opposition chanted “Stop vote theft,” the Chair adjourned proceedings for the rest of the day.
The Rajya Sabha will now take up a 16-hour debate on Operation Sindoor on Tuesday, with key ministers, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, expected to participate. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also likely to intervene during the discussion.
Sources told NDTV that the Congress, the principal Opposition party, has been allotted around two hours in the debate. The party’s national president, Mallikarjun Kharge, will lead the charge from their side.
Meanwhile, in the Lok Sabha, the long-awaited debate on Operation Sindoor finally got underway after three earlier adjournments. Rajnath Singh opened the discussion by calling the military response to the Pahalgam terror attack “historic” and paid tribute to the armed forces for their unwavering commitment to national security.
“Operation Sindoor was not just a military operation—it was a firm and effective assertion of our anti-terrorism policy. It reflects our resolve to protect India’s sovereignty and our duty towards our citizens,” Singh said.
Apart from Singh, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and BJP leader Baijayant Panda are also expected to speak in the House.
On the Opposition side, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha, will spearhead their response, joined by colleagues Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Deepender Hooda, Praneet Shinde, Saptagiri Ulaka, and Bijendra Ola.
Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju has urged Opposition parties to engage constructively and avoid rhetoric that, he warned, echoes the language used by Pakistan.
