Australian authorities moved swiftly to make arrests and secure the area after a terrorist shooting targeting the Jewish community killed at least 11 people at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, officials told media.

New South Wales Police said one of the suspected gunmen was killed during the attack, while the second alleged shooter remains in critical condition under police guard in the hospital.

Investigators told international news organisations that multiple people are being questioned as part of the probe into the incident, which has been formally declared a terrorist act.

The shooting took place on Sunday during an event marking the first day of Hanukkah at Bondi Beach. Officials said the attack was “designed to target” Jewish people. Twenty-nine others were injured and taken to hospital, including a child.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the incident as “an act of evil antisemitism” and said national security agencies were on high alert. Bondi Beach, one of Australia’s most iconic tourist destinations, attracts millions of visitors annually and had more than 1,000 people present at the time of the attack.
