Accused arrested for assault on young Kashmiri shawl seller: Uttarakhand DGP informs JKSA

The Kashmiri teenager sustained head injuries and a fractured arm in an alleged communal attack in Vikas Nagar, Uttarakhand.

Srinagar: In the brutal assault case of an 18-year-old Kashmiri shawl seller who was attacked in by a group of goons in the Vikas Nagar area of Dehradun, the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) on Thursday said that the prime accused, Sanjay Yadav, has been taken into custody, and legal proceedings are underway.

Uttarakhand Director General of Police Deepam Seth has assured “zero tolerance” towards communal intimidation and violence, particularly against Kashmiri traders, following the brutal assault.

An FIR, registered as No. 26/2026 at Vikas Nagar Police Station, has been filed against Yadav and another person under Sections 117(2) and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

JKSA National Convenor Nasir Khuehami raised the matter directly with the DGP, who informed the association that authorities had taken serious cognisance of the incident and initiated immediate legal action.

The DGP assured that the strongest possible measures would be taken to prevent any form of communal targeting and to safeguard the safety, dignity and constitutional rights of Kashmiri students and citizens in Uttarakhand.

He further emphasised that Kashmiri traders are equal Indian citizens with the right to live and work anywhere in the country, adding that no pressure, compromise or settlement attempts would be allowed to interfere with the investigation or prosecution.

Welcoming the swift police action, JKSA said it was an important first step but stressed that accountability must be time-bound, transparent and exemplary. The association reiterated that acts of communal profiling, mob violence and intimidation against vulnerable communities cannot be normalised.

JKSA also said the prompt response by Uttarakhand Police has helped restore confidence among Kashmiri traders, many of whom were feeling insecure after the incident.
