Srinagar: As the world observes World Cancer Day, data from Jammu and Kashmir indicate a consistent upward trend in cancer cases among women, particularly breast cancer, which remains the most prevalent malignancy in the region.
According to the latest figures released in the Rajya Sabha by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, based on data from the National Cancer Registry Programme of the National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research, breast cancer cases rose from 908 in 2021 to 916 in 2022, 923 in 2023, 930 in 2024 and 938 in 2025. Deaths linked to the disease also increased steadily, from 390 in 2021 to 403 in 2025.
Cervical cancer, though far less common, showed a modest rise, with cases increasing from 70 in 2021 to 73 in 2025. Mortality remained largely stable, with 38 deaths reported in 2021 and 2022, rising slightly to 39 from 2023 onward.
Ovarian cancer cases climbed from 371 in 2021 to 383 in 2025, while related deaths increased from 226 to 234 during the same period.
Health experts say the steady rise, though lower than in larger states, highlights the urgent need for improved screening, early diagnosis and sustained awareness campaigns across Jammu and Kashmir to curb the growing burden of cancer.
Every year on February 4, World Cancer Day is observed across the globe to raise awareness about cancer and promote prevention, early detection and timely treatment.
Led by the Union for International Cancer Control in collaboration with the World Health Organisation, the initiative highlights the growing global burden of the disease and the need for collective action.
The day serves as a reminder that reducing the impact of cancer requires efforts from governments, health systems and individuals alike, whether through awareness, support for patients or improved access to medical care.
