Srinagar: A massive fire broke out in the early hours of Thursday in the Chattabal area of Srinagar, causing extensive damage to a cluster of closely built residential houses, officials said.

An official said that more than 10 residential structures suffered damage in the incident. “The fire call was received at 6:31 am, prompting an immediate response, with the first fire tenders dispatched within a minute,” he said.

“Upon reaching the spot, firefighting teams found 3-4 houses already engulfed in flames. The situation worsened after two to three LPG cylinders exploded, causing the fire to spread rapidly to adjoining structures,” the official said, adding that a total of 8-10 houses were gutted.

He said that cooling operations were underway to prevent re-ignition, while the cause of the fire is being ascertained. (KNO)
