Explosions were heard in Tehran on Wednesday as the war involving the US and Israel entered its fifth day, after earlier strikes on an Iranian nuclear site and retaliatory attacks across the Gulf.
Iranian state television reported blasts around the capital at dawn. Israel said its air defences were activated against incoming Iranian missiles.
Nearly 800 people have been killed in Iran so far, according to reports. US President Donald Trump said the conflict could last several weeks or longer.
US Central Command chief Adm. Brad Cooper said Iran has launched more than 500 ballistic missiles and 2,000 drones. He said the US has struck nearly 2,000 targets and severely degraded Iran’s air defences.
Israel said it launched a broad wave of strikes targeting Tehran’s governmental infrastructure and redeployed a reserve division to the Lebanon border. It also reported strikes on Basij and internal security command centres.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced a 17th wave of strikes, claiming to have launched over 230 drones at US bases in the Gulf and caused significant damage in Bahrain.
Iran will hold a three-day state funeral for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei beginning Wednesday night in Tehran.
