Ramban: Traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu highway was suspended Tuesday after a landslide hit the Mehar area of Ramban district following heavy rainfall, officials said.
Debris accumulated on the road, prompting authorities to halt vehicular movement from both sides as a precaution.
Officials said continuous rainfall triggered landslides and shooting stones at multiple vulnerable locations along the highway, worsening conditions.
Restoration work has been launched, with machinery deployed to clear debris and restore traffic.
“Traffic has been halted from both sides on the Srinagar-Jammu highway due to landslides and shooting stones at several locations, along with continuous rainfall across the entire stretch,” Jammu and Kashmir Police said in an advisory.
Authorities advised commuters to avoid travel on the highway until weather improves and the road is cleared.
Traffic officials said stranded vehicles are being managed at designated points, while vulnerable stretches are under constant monitoring.
The Ramban sector remains highly prone to landslides due to fragile terrain and steep slopes. Authorities said traffic will resume once the road is declared safe.
