Iran’s Supreme National Security Council on Wednesday said it has agreed to a two-week ceasefire in the ongoing conflict and will begin negotiations with the United States in Islamabad from Friday.

“It is emphasised that this does not signify the termination of the war,” the council said in a statement.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said maritime passage through the Strait of Hormuz would be permitted for the next two weeks under Iranian military supervision. It remains unclear whether this would ease Iran’s control over the critical route for global energy supplies.

In a post on his social media platform, US President Donald Trump said he would “suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks,” provided Tehran agreed to the “complete, immediate, and safe opening” of the Strait of Hormuz.
