New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Friday granted three-day interim bail to Umar Khalid in connection with the 2020 Northeast Delhi violence case, allowing him to visit his mother ahead of her surgery.

A bench comprising Justices Prathiba M Singh and Madhu Jain granted relief from June 1 to June 3.

“Taking an empathetic view of the matter that the appellant’s mother is to undergo surgery, the court is inclined only to grant interim bail for a period of three days from 1st June to 3rd June in order to enable the appellant to spend some time with his mother,” the bench said in its order.

Earlier, a Delhi court had rejected Khalid’s plea seeking 15 days’ interim bail to attend the 40th-day ritual (chehlum) of his late uncle and to care for his ailing mother.

In its May 19 order rejecting the plea, the trial court observed that while Khalid and other co-accused had previously been granted interim bail without violating any conditions, that alone could not justify granting relief on every occasion.

The court had said each fresh bail application must be assessed independently on its merits and allowed only when the grounds are found to be reasonable.
