Srinagar: The Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, VK Birdi, on Tuesday said the Jammu and Kashmir Police is taking strict action against drug peddlers under the NDPS Act and the stringent PIT-NDPS law, especially against repeat offenders.
The IGP said the police have always tried to handle the narcotics issue through a variety of ways, with the legal response being the primary mechanism.
He added that peddlers who buy or sell contraband are being subjected to stern action, and those who do not stop even after legal proceedings are being booked under the PIT-NDPS Act.
The IGP noted that the society has now moved from a “denial mode to acceptance mode” regarding substance abuse. People have become aware that they or their family members have become victims of drug abuse, he said.
He further observed that once a victim comes forward, the police, along with teachers, elders, and other stakeholders can help resolve the problem.
Referring to the Drug-Free India campaign, the IGP said it is not just a government initiative but a people-driven campaign with voluntary participation. He stressed that while the police have a role, the rest of the society also has to fight this battle together.
He was speaking at a programme organised by the Central Government Pensioners Welfare Association in Kothibag, which he said successfully involved children and youngsters.
On the upcoming Shri Amarnath Yatra, the IGP said preparations are still going on and information would be shared at an appropriate time.
Regarding the month of Muharram, he said the administration has started several meetings and neighbourhood committees are holding discussions at district levels to ensure no difficulties are faced. (KNS)
