Budgam: A day after raging floodwaters of the swollen Sukhnag Nallah swept away the Municipal Shopping Complex at Beerwah in central Kashmir’s Budgam district, authorities have reiterated their appeal to people to stay away from rivers, nallahs and other flood-prone areas as heavy rainfall continues across parts of Jammu and Kashmir.
The shopping complex, which housed dozens of business establishments, was washed away on Tuesday after the water level in the Sukhnag Nallah rose sharply following incessant rainfall.
No loss of life or injuries were reported, as the district administration had issued advance weather warnings, allowing shopkeepers to vacate the premises and remove their merchandise before the floodwaters engulfed the complex.
Eyewitnesses said the structure was gradually weakened by the force of the surging waters before collapsing into the nallah, leaving behind extensive damage.
The incident came amid widespread flooding across Budgam district, where overflowing streams and flash floods inundated residential areas and disrupted normal life.
Officials visited the affected site to assess the damage, while the financial losses suffered by shopkeepers are being evaluated.
With heavy rainfall continuing in several parts of Jammu and Kashmir, authorities have again urged people to avoid rivers, nallahs and flood-prone areas and to strictly follow official advisories until weather conditions improve.
