Mirwaiz says placed under house arrest ahead of Rabi-ul-Awwal

CCTV footage shared by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq purportedly showing security personnel outside his residence amid his reported house arrest.

Srinagar: Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday said he had been placed under house arrest again ahead of the beginning of Rabi-ul-Awwal, the Islamic month associated with the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad.

In a post on X, Mirwaiz condemned what he described as repeated and arbitrary restrictions imposed on Fridays, saying he had once again been prevented from attending prayers at the historic Jama Masjid in Srinagar.

“Placed under house arrest yet again, on the eve of the blessed month of Rabi-ul-Awwal,” he said.

Questioning the authorities’ claims of “normalcy” in Jammu and Kashmir, Mirwaiz said the repeated restrictions on his movement and access to the Jama Masjid undermined the credibility of that narrative.

“If the authorities themselves do not trust their own narrative of ‘normalcy’ enough to repeatedly prevent me from going to Jama Masjid, what credibility does that narrative have?” he said.
