According to Ukrainian media, three Ukrainian military Intelligence officers were hurt in a shootout between the Security Service of Ukraine and Defence Intelligence in Kyiv on Wednesday as authorities probed a suspected Russian Federal Security Service plot.
The confrontation took place in Kyiv’s Dniprovskyi district, where police closed a street and launched what officials described as a “special police operation”. Investigators from Ukraine’s State Bureau of Investigation and the SBU’s Alpha special operations unit later arrived at the scene. The two sides agreed to unload their weapons so investigative work could begin, Ukrainska Pravda reported.
The SBU said earlier on Wednesday that it and Defence Intelligence had together prevented an attack allegedly organised by Russia’s FSB against a leader of a Russian opposition political movement who had come to Ukraine for Independence Day.
“The SSU, together with DIU, has foiled an attack that the Russian FSB was preparing against one of the leaders of a Russian opposition political movement who came to Ukraine to mark our country’s Independence Day,” the agency said. “Investigative and operational actions are underway.”
The incident has been linked in Ukrainian media reports to the reported disappearance of Stepan Kaplunov, a deputy commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps but authorities have not publicly linked the two events.
