One person died and 11 others were missing after a landslip in eastern China early Saturday, a day after Typhoon Saudel brought days of torrential rain, China Central Television reported.
A landslip hit part of a village in Suichuan County in Jiangxi province around 4 a.m., damaging about a dozen houses. Rescue teams arrived at the scene quickly and residents were evacuated to safer ground to avoid further danger.
One person pulled from the rubble was pronounced dead and two others were rescued alive. Search and rescue operations for the missing were still going on.
Heavy rains associated with Saudel had battered Jiangxi and surrounding provinces before the storm made landfall in the provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian and continued inland.
Saudel had affected more than 128,000 people in 53 counties and led to the emergency evacuation of nearly 8,700 people, authorities in Jiangxi said.
According to the provincial flood control authorities, more than 599,000 people in Fujian had been evacuated from high-risk offshore and onshore areas by Friday night.
The rain has also increased the risk of further landslides and flooding in the mountains.
