Yemen’s Houthi movement on Monday accused Saudi-backed government forces of launching missile attacks in the al-Jawf, al-Bayda, Marib and Taiz regions, according to multiple media outlets aligned with the group.
No word on how many missiles were fired immediately or the extent of the damage or casualties from the alleged attacks was given in the reports. Additionally, there was no immediate independent confirmation of the Houthi claims.
The claims come amid a surge in fighting between the Iran-backed Houthis and forces that support Yemen’s internationally recognised government in recent days. Renewed violence has centred on western Yemen and the strategic Taiz region, raising fears that the country’s fragile conflict could flare up further.
Yemeni government forces said Sunday they had captured the Hays district in Hodeidah province and made advances in Taiz and al-Jawf, while the Houthis fired three ballistic missiles towards Taiz city, according to a report carried by SANA, citing Yemen’s state news agency.
The latest allegations could not be immediately independently verified. Clashes could reignite Yemen’s humanitarian crisis and block vital arteries connecting the western parts of the country.
