As heavy rain caused flooding and raised rivers to dangerous levels in Japan’s Nagoya on Tuesday, authorities issued evacuation advisories to more than a million people and urged residents to move to safer places, Japanese media reported.
Nagoya issued its highest Level 5 emergency safety warning for parts of the city due to heavy rain that raised the risk of flooding along rivers including the Kanare River. Authorities warned some areas may already have been flooded.
As of Tuesday night, the city said some 1.31 million people in Nagoya were subject to Level 4 evacuation orders, with warnings also issued in surrounding areas.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said Nagoya received 104.5 millimetres of rain in one hour through 4:53 p.m., the most hourly rainfall in the city since records began in 1890, Weathernews said.
Authorities warned residents to stay away from underground areas, underpasses, and other areas prone to rapid flooding.
The heavy rain also brought a Level 5 special flood warning for the Shonai River in Aichi and Gifu prefectures, with authorities warning that flooding was imminent or may have already occurred.
