US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping ended a three-day Washington summit Friday without a major agreement on artificial intelligence, leaving unresolved differences over how the two countries should manage the rapidly developing technology.
The leaders discussed AI and trade, Taiwan and other security issues but no deal emerged to curb AI development or set up joint safeguards. Reuters reported that the summit resulted in a two-month extension of a US-China trade truce.
The Guardian reported Thursday that Xi said the two countries had a “responsibility to develop and manage AI for good” and should ensure its development is “always under human control”.
Trump has taken a more hands-off approach, saying before the meeting that he wanted to leave AI “exactly where it is” and using “super intelligence” to describe the technology.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, in talks with Chinese officials ahead of the summit, had suggested a mechanism for the two countries to alert each other to AI incidents with implications for national security. But it was not clear whether Beijing had agreed to the proposal.
The absence of an AI agreement comes as Washington and Beijing compete for technological leadership and face growing worries about AI-related security risks.
