US special envoy, was to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday in St Petersburg to explore ways to conclude the war in Ukraine a day after his discussions with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Oslo.
The talk is part of a revived diplomatic push with Ukraine, the US and European leaders working towards a way out of the conflict, Reuters reported.
Zelenskyy said on Tuesday that the United States had agreed to resume sharing intelligence with Kyiv, which allowed it to be forewarned of upcoming Russian missile strikes.
“We are glad that intelligence is working now,” Zelenskyy said when he travelled to Norway, according to the AP. “But so that civilians are protected, so the Ukrainian army can react to this shelling, we need advance alerts.”
The Ukrainian president also met with Witkoff and other European leaders in Oslo, where they discussed security guarantees, energy infrastructure and a possible ceasefire.
Zelenskyy said he also proposed a summit with himself, US President Donald Trump and Putin, adding that some issues had to be dealt with at the highest level.
Witkoff had been expected to deliver ideas agreed to in Oslo to Russian officials. The diplomatic effort comes as the fighting rages on and Russian missile and drone strikes inflict more civilian casualties in Ukraine.
Trump has called for Kyiv to settle, whereas Zelenskyy has been calling for strong security assurances in any post-war settlement.
