Traders in Delhi have written to Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi asking her to reschedule the INDIA bloc’s November 1 rally at Ramlila Maidan, saying the rally is likely to have a serious impact on trade of up to Rs 12,000 crore across 20 big markets in Delhi.

The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) has appealed that the rally be scheduled for November 10-11 or any later date after Diwali. It has recommended that the venue be changed to Burari Ground.

“Rally may draw close to 10 lakh people and 15,000-20,000 vehicles and may cause heavy traffic congestion which shall halt the movement of goods and shoppers,” said CTI chairman Brijesh Goyal.

“We are not against the rally. We are humbly appealing to save our livelihoods during the peak Diwali season,” Goyal said, according to news agency IANS.

The traders association said around 20 wholesale and retail markets, including Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazar, Connaught Place and Karol Bagh, may come under its effect.

The appeal came after the CTI said it had written three letters to Rahul Gandhi requesting a deferral but did not receive a favourable response.

Dhanteras is on 6th November and Diwali will be celebrated on 8th November.
