Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket. The Australia all-rounder was known for his explosive batting and sought-after tournament wins.
The 38-year-old had been retired from 50-over and T20 internationals since 2025, but has now decided to hang up the bat in T20 international career. He will also retire from Victoria’s state 50-over and four-day cricket to play franchise T20 cricket, including for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League.
Maxwell said on “The Final Word” podcast, “I’m thankful for the time I got to play for my country.”
He played for Australia in 149 ODIs, 130 T20 internationals and seven Tests. In T20Is he made 2,897 runs at a strike rate of 154.42 with five centuries, a record he shares with Rohit Sharma.
He played a vital role in Australia’s success in the 2015 and 2023 ODI World Cups as well as the 2021 T20 World Cup. His not out 201 against Afghanistan in the 2023 ODI World Cup is regarded as one of the finest knocks of the tournament.
Maxwell said he was hoping to have a farewell game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground but understood the team needed to build the next generation of players at international level. “I wanted to keep myself in the best possible shape for the last few tournaments in my career.”
