Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has said the midterm election results in the United States are unlikely to influence its policy towards the Islamic republic.
Anyone expecting shifts in US policy due to one political party or concessions from Iran to persuade Washington to end its hostility is “seriously mistaken”, Khamenei said in a written statement published on Wednesday, according to Reuters.
His remarks followed the Republican Party’s setbacks in Tuesday’s midterm elections, in which Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress, dealing a significant blow to President Donald Trump.
Khamenei also said any US renewed attack on Iran would lead to a far more expansive war. “If such aggressions are repeated, the scope of the war will be much wider,” he was quoted as saying in his statement.
The Supreme Leader said that Iran challenged the US’ supremacy by attacking the US’ military installations in the region as well as taking control of the Strait of Hormuz.
Khamenei has been absent from public view since the war erupted in February when US-Israeli strikes martyred his father and predecessor Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
His remarks come amid negotiations to avoid a return to all-out combat between Washington and Tehran.
