Restrictions on Hurriyat leadership resulted in youth taking lead: Jama’at Chief

Srinagar: Jama’at-e-Islami Chief, Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, has sought release of political prisoners particularly Hurriyat Conference leaders “for restoration of peace” in J&K.

In an exclusive interview with KNS, the Jama’at Chief said that government by imposing restrictions on the political activities of the Hurriyat Conference leaders has “given an opportunity to the angered youth to take decisions on their own”.

Explaining his argument on the lead role taken by youth, Bhat said, “when leadership has been jailed and restrictions are imposed on the political activities of the dissenting voices, the youth take decisions on their own.”

Bhat maintained that political detentions have “largely contributed” to the current crisis in Kashmir.

Bhat, it may be noted, was re-called as Jama’at-e-Islami Chief in August 2015. He succeeded Mohammad Abdullah Wani. Currently, it is his third term as head of J&K’s largest socio-economic-politico organization.

In reply to a question, Bhat said, “the Kashmir dispute should be resolved to respect the wishes and aspirations of the people and avoid a major confrontation between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan.”

“Kashmir resolution is the only way to give people of the divided parts of Jammu & Kashmir an opportunity to decide their political destiny. All the parties, India, Pakistan and Kashmir, to the dispute must be involved to find a solution which is acceptable to all of us,” Bhat said.

On the increasing militancy in J&K, the Jama’at Chief said, “militants want resolution of the dispute.”

“We are not in a position to talk about militancy or advise them over the issues concerning the dispute. We will always insist resolution of the issue through a composite dialogue process. The militants too want resolution of the issue. Once they find that the issue is being resolved through dialogue, they will also show respect for the dialogue,” he added.
