Kumar, Aijaz were friends and were on a night out at Pahalgam, say police in presser.

Srinagar: J&K Police on in a presser on Thursday revealed that the cop who was missing from a fortnight was alcoholic and a sodomiser.

Sameer Ji Kumar, a J&K Police constable and a resident of Nagrota, Jammu, was reported missing from his duties in Kashmir from May 14th, 2017.

Addressing a press conference at Police Control Room (PCR) in Srinagar, Deputy Inspector General, Central Kashmir range, Gh Hassan Bhat, said, “Constable Sameer along with an SPO (Special Police Officer of J&K Police), who happens to be his friend, drove to Pahalgam for a night out via Batwara.”

The SPO was identified as Aijaz Ahmad Mir, a resident of Ompora Budgam. The duo travelled in a Maruti Car which belonged to Aijaz’s father.

Bhat said that the duo stopped at Batwara and purchased three bottles of wine.

“At Pahalgam, Sameer sexually assaulted his friend Aijaz,” Bhat said and termed it a case of sodomy.

Next day, Bhat added, Sameer and Aijaz accompanied former’s uncle to Police Lines Kupwara (KPL).

Sameer’s uncle is a constable in JKP and was transferred to Kupwara from Pahalgam and was scheduled to join duties the same day at Police Lines Kupwara.

“The trio drove to Kupwara where Sameer’s uncle was dropped at KPL,” the DIG said.

On way back, Aijaz stopped on the banks of river Puhroo in Kupwara itself and got down from his car.

“Aijaz picked up a stone and hit Sameer on the head who was sitting on the front seat,” DIG said.

“It was in a fit of revenge that Aijaz hit Sameer’s head,” he added.

“Aijaz thought Sameer might exploit the sexual assault incident which would have shamed him.”

Sameer died on the spot, Bhat informed.

“Aijaz then drove further more and disposed off the body in the river which is yet to be retrieved,” he said.

JKP even used the services of Marcos – special Navy divers – to fish out the body.

“We have seized the car, stone and the soap by which the car was washed after the murder,” the Central Kashmir police chief said. “Aijaz is in custody.”

When asked whether it was the first case of sodomy in Jammu and Kashmir Police, the DIG replied, “We don’t keep record of such cases.”
