Sumbal shootout: People demand bodies of slain ‘militants’, clashes erupt

Srinagar: Intense clashes erupted in Sumbal area of Bandipora district on Monday as people remained adamant seeking four bodies of militants, who police said, were killed in encounter this morning.

A local from the area told the FreePressKashmir that scores of people came out on roads this morning after the encounter was over seeking the bodies. However, police did not accede to the demand.

Director General of J&K police had said, “in a joint operation by CRPF and J&K police, four militants were killed in Sumbal.”

During a pre-dawn attack, four unidentified militants fired at a CRPF camp in Irrigation Colony of Sumbal area who were later killed later in the encounter after reinforcements rushed to the area.

“They attempted a suicide attack,” Dr Vaid added

However, people later took to streets seeking bodies of the slain militants.

“Youth fought pitched battles with the armed forces as they sought the bodies of the militants for burial,” the local said.

“The clashes spread to main bazaar Sumbal and area witnessed shutdown,” he added.

The government has snapped all lines of communication except state run BSNL to the area.
