Geelani says Ayatollah Khamenei’s statement on Kashmir a welcome step

“Iran has a leading role to play and they can be of great help to generate a consensus and public opinion against mass killings in Kashmir”

Srinagar: Welcoming Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei’s statement, the chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G), Syed Ali Geelani termed it as ‘timely and pragmatic’.

Pertinently, last month on June 26, on the Islamic holy day of Eid-al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramzan, the month of fasting, Khamenei said that people should come out openly in showing their support for Kashmir.

Geelani thanked Iran’s supreme religious leader for “supporting the people of Jammu and Kashmir in their struggle for freedom.”

Geelani in his appeal to the international community, institutions and influential personalities, urged them to use their influence and asked them to support the people of J&K in “their struggle against forced occupation”.

“We hope that Iran, being a country based on Islamic ideology, will support our cause.”

Geelani said that Iran’s revolutionary leader Imam Khomeini always followed a straight forward policy and supported Kashmir’s mission.

“These two issues are very much similar”, said Geelani, “while referring to Kashmir and Palestinian and added that these issues are too sensitive and related to whole Muslim Ummah (community).”

The religious places are desecrated and a planned genocide is being carried in both Kashmir and Palestine, said Geelani.

“Unless these two issues are resolved according to people’s aspirations and expectations, the instability will continue to haunt people living in the Muslim world,” he added.

“Iran has a leading role to play and they can be of great help to generate a consensus and public opinion against mass killings in these two regions”, said Geelani.

Geelani said that considering his high caliber & stature, Ayatollah Khamenei can prove of great help as a facilitator in this regard.
