‘Geelani completes seven years under house arrest’

No court has ever issued a formal order of his detention: Hurriyat Spokesman

Srinagar: Hurriyat (G) Chairman Syed Ali Geelani today, on Friday, July 14, 2017, completed 7 years under huse arrest, said a spokesman in a statement.

The statement pointed out that the octogenarian leader has been detained at gunpoint as no court has ever issued any formal order of his detention.

“His continued detention is highly condemnable and in his case, rule of law has been thrown into the dust bin.

Geelani was placed under house arrest in 2010 during when National Conference was in power.

During the 2014 assembly elections, he released briefly during which he held massive rallies in northern and southern parts of the state.

However, later he was again put under house detention.

In opposition, the Poeples Democratic Party used to raise the issue of Geelani’s detention and castigate the then Omar Abdullah lead government. However, since PDP has come into power along with their coalition partner the BJP, their attitude has been no different.

It’s also pertinent to mention that Geelani during all these years was hardly allowed to attend congregational prayers on Fridays.
