Srinagar: Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has congratulated President elect Ram Nath Kovind on his becoming the 14th President of India.

In her congratulatory message to Kovind, the Chief Minister said his victory marks an important milestone in the political history of the country. She said the election of Kovind reflects the empowerment of underprivileged, backward, minorities and other weaker sections of the society.

Mehbooba hoped the tenure of  Kovind would prove to be inspiring, encouraging and egalitarian.

Ram Nath Kovind, a lawyer, former MP and governor, was elected India’s next President on Thursday. The government-backed candidate, a Dalit leader, won nearly 66 per cent of the votes cast by an electoral college of MPs and state lawmakers on Monday. He will be sworn in on July 25.

The opposition’s candidate Meira Kumar, also a Dalit (lower caste) lost by a huge margin. However she scored the second highest value of votes for an opposition candidate.

She in her campaign had said that this election is a battle to protect the ‘ideology and principles’ which India believes in.
