US Department of State wishes Afghanistan on it’s Independence day

Washington: The United States Department of State on Friday wished the people of Aghanistan a ‘happy Independence day’.

“On behalf of the Government of the United States of America, I would like to congratulate the Afghan people as they celebrate their 98th anniversary of independence on August 19th,” a press statement from the Secretary of State, said.

“The Afghan spirit of resilience and courage in the face of adversity continues to guide the people of Afghanistan toward a better future. Afghanistan has made significant economic, political, and social progress in the last 16 years, and we bear witness every day to the Afghan people’s dedication to building a more democratic and peaceful country,” the statement added.

Often described as a landlocked country, Afghanistan is situated in midst of Central and Southern Asia. Being a war-torn country, the independence day of Afghanistan has lost much of its sheer and elegance in the due course of time. Afghanistan has long being inflicted with terrorist attacks.

Celebration of Independence Day in Afghanistan takes place on 19 th August. Since the ancient times, the land has been invaded by numerous rulers including Alexander the great, Mongol rulers and Turkish Empire. However, Ahmad Shah Durrani in the eighteenth century annexed many of the neighboring territories and made Kandahar its capital. After the end of the third Anglo-Afghan war, Afghanistan achieved full independence from the British Empire on August 19 1919.

“Our strong friendship with Afghanistan is based on our mutual dedication to helping the Afghan people secure a safe and prosperous future. Today, the United States joins the people of Afghanistan in celebrating your independence,”

Afghan Independence Day is celebrated in Afghanistan on 19 August to commemorate the Anglo-Afghan Treaty of 1919. The treaty granted a complete neutral relation between Afghanistan and Britain.
