Lashkar chief Abu Ismail killed in a brief gunfight in Nowgam

Srinagar: Abu Ismail, a top Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant operating in Kashmir was killed on Thursday in a brief encounter with forces in Arigam area in Nowgam area of Srinagar district, police said.

Lashkar-e-Taiba is one of the largest and most active Islamic militant organizations in South Asia, operating mainly from Pakistan. It was founded in 1987 by Hafiz Saeed, Abdullah Azzam and Zafar Iqbal in Afghanistan, with funding from Osama Bin Laden. Its headquarters are in Muridke, near Lahore in Punjab province of Pakistan, and the group operates several training camps in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

“LeT militant Abu Ismail of Pakistan along with his accomplice was killed in Nowgam. A Huge achievement for police and SF (security forces),” Jammu and Kashmir police said, adding that he was the architect of the attack on Amarnath Yatra in which seven pilgrims, including six women, were killed and 19 were injured.

According to a reports, the encounter ensued after armed forces cordoned off the area following inputs about the presence of terrorists.
