Mumbai: At least 22 people, including a child, were killed in a stampede at Mumbai’s Elphinstone railway station on Friday.
The stampede took place at 10:30 am on a foot overbridge linking Elphinstone Road and Parel suburban railway stations. More than 30 people are seriously injured.
Speaking to various media organisations, the commuters said that the foot overbridge at Elphinstone was narrow and there is always a rush during the peak hours.
An eyewitness, who was standing at the station platform when the incident took place, said, “Commuters started panicking after somebody shouted that the bridge was collapsing and that there was a short circuit. People started pushing and those in the middle of the stairs fell. Many commuters who tried to escape through the railing got stuck.”
The injured have been taken to KEM hospital while the names of the deceased have not been revealed yet.

I spend at least 10 mins of my day in a queue at #Parel to get up the stairs to exit. Getting to work is such a struggle. #mumbailocal pic.twitter.com/ep3sk59zau
