Forces raid houses, harass families of Hizb Militants, says UJC

‘Braid chopping aimed to create fear in valley’

Srinagar: The United Jehad Council (UJC) on Thursday said that the Indian Armed forces raided the houses of top Hizb-ul-Mujahideen commander Riyaz Ahmad Naikoo of Beighpora, Pulwama and Adnan Ahmad Lone of Bandna, Pulwama, and harassed their families.

In a tele-statement, the UJC Spokesman Syed Sadaqat Hussain condemned the forces’ raid on the houses of these two top militants and alleged that forces also damaged their houses.

The United Jihad Council, also known as the Muttahida Jihad Council (MJC), is an umbrella organisation for unified command and control over the militant groups operating in Jammu and Kashmir. It was formed in the summer of 1994 and is currently headed by Syed Salahuddin, the leader of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen. The organisation was created to unify and focus efforts of various armed militant groups fighting against the ‘Indian rule’ in Kashmir. This made distribution of resources like arms, ammunition, propaganda materials and communications more streamlined. It also made it easier to coordinate and pool resources of various militant groups to collect information, plan operations and strike at targets of military importance inside Kashmir.

“The Indian forces have failed to fight against the militants so they have started harassing their families, which is a sign of their frustration,” he said.

Meanwhile, the UJC spokesman said the “Indian agencies and their paid agents including its forces are behind braid chopping in Kashmir to create fear in the valley”.

Meanwhile, militant outfit Hizbul Mujhadeen on Thursday said that the ransacking of houses of militants and the detention of their family members by Indian Armed Forces is an act of sheer frustration.

Hizbul Mujahideen is the largest indigenous armed group ‘fighting against Indian rule’ in the Himalayan territory since an armed rebellion broke out in 1989.

Hizb Spokesperson Syed Sadaqat Hussain said that Government Forces have targeted the houses of three Hizb militants in South Kashmir. “These militants include our Commander Reyaz Ahmed Naiko, Muhammad Adnan Lone and Latif Ahmed. The Government Forces not only ransacked the houses but also detained the relatives of these militants. We condemn this action and want to clear that such tactics will not break our resolve,” he said and added that such tactics only prove the frustration of Forces.
