No Friday prayers at Jamia Masjid for the 5th consecutive week

Srinagar: The congregational Friday prayers were disallowed for the fifth consecutive week at the historic Jamia Masjid in Srinagar. Restrictions were imposed in the area to prevent protests.

The Joint Resistance Leadership had called for a shutdown and protests to mark October 27th as black day and a day of mourning. It was on this day in 1947, that Indian Army landed in Srinagar.

Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq who addresses the faithful at the mosque every Friday has been placed under house arrest.

Restrictions were imposed in Rainawari, Safa Kadal, Nowhatta, Khanyar, Maharaj Gunj, Rainawari and Maisuma in Srinagar to prevent protests in these areas.

Earlier in the week, the Opposition National Conference had stated that the only achievement of the present government was to stop people from offering Friday prayers at Jamia Masjid.
